The 1% risk rule is a risk management guideline where a trader risks no more than 1% of their trading capital on a single trade.
What Is the 1% Risk Rule?
The 1% risk rule means that the maximum amount risked on any single trade is limited to 1% of the total trading account.
For example:
- Trading account: £5,000
- Maximum risk per trade: £50 (1%)
This does not mean investing only 1% of the account. Instead, it refers to the maximum amount that could be lost if the trade reaches the predefined stop-loss level
Why Do Traders Use the 1% Rule?
The purpose of the 1% rule is to help reduce the impact of individual losing trades.
Potential benefits include:
- preserving trading capital
- maintaining consistency
- reducing emotional decision-making
- allowing traders to continue trading after losses
Because financial markets are unpredictable, limiting exposure on individual trades is often considered an important part of disciplined trading.
Can Traders Risk More or Less Than 1%?
No.
The 1% rule does not guarantee profits or prevent losses.
It is simply one approach to risk management that some traders choose to incorporate into their trading plan.
Successful trading depends on many factors, including:
- market conditions
- trading strategy
- discipline
- education
- effective risk management
Does the 1% Rule Guarantee Success?
The 1% rule is a guideline rather than a universal standard.
Some traders may choose to risk:
- less than 1%
- around 1%
- a different percentage based on their individual risk tolerance and trading plan
Whatever approach is chosen, consistency and understanding overall exposure are generally considered important aspects of risk management.
The Relationship Between the 1% Rule and Position Sizing
The 1% rule relies on appropriate position sizing.
Rather than choosing a fixed trade size every time, traders adjust the position size according to:
- account balance
- stop-loss distanceNow that you understand how traders manage risk on each position, the next step is learning how trade setups are identified. Before entering any trade, many traders first look for areas of interest where price may react, then develop a plan before placing an order.
